MUSICAL INTERLUDE 2

Sorry for the delay on this, folks, but I'm busy with the script at the moment.  That, coupled with a fairly debaucherous June bank holiday weekend, has pushed me a little behind.  Thankfully, the script is going really well, I've got my voice back after West Fest, and I'm feeling only marginally exhausted.  So here it is, another post that will no doubt bring unbridled joy into your lives.  I'm a lot like Jesus, really.  Today's reading is from the Gospel according to Vicariator.

I was at a house party a couple of years ago, when someone decided to put on one of The Kinks best of/greatest hits collections.  I had never sat down and listened to a lot of The Kinks in one session before, and I was simply amazed when presented with a concentration of their hits.  They truly had a stunning output: All Day And All of The Night, Tired of Waiting For You, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Lola, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Days; each and every one a bona fide classic, and there are many more besides.  While you might expect that Death of A Clown would be a more appropriate selection for this blog, my song of choice is You Really Got Me.


The Kinks were formed in North London is in 1964 by brothers Roy and Dave Davies.  The brothers are the only two members to have stayed in the band throughout their thirty-two year run.  They had a tempestuous relationship, and the years have not mellowed their tempers.  Only last year, Dave said of Ray, 'You've heard of vampires.  Well, Ray sucks me dry of ideas, emotions and ­creativity.  It's toxic for me to be with him.  He's a control freak.'  Another choice remark is, 'I think Ray has been happy for only three years in his life, and those were the three years before I was born.'  According to Dave, at his 50th birthday, Ray jumped up on the table and stamped all over his cake.  Ray's response to his brothers remarks is, 'Yeah, it depends on what side of the bed he gets up on.'
  Perhaps they were better friends when they were younger, or maybe their youth allowed them to burn off their animosity as creativity, but there is no denying the power of their music.  They have inspired musicians all over the world to pick up instruments and play, and they have motivated handsome writers to fill their blogs with all kinds of awesome observations.
  You Really Got Me was written in 1964 by Ray Davies, and proved to be one of, if not the, most important songs in The Kinks career.  The Kinks needed a hit.  Their previous two singles had failed to chart, and if they didn't break through on their third attempt, they faced being dropped by their label.  It sounds like the ultimate cliched rock 'n' roll story, but it might just have been the one that spawned a thousand imitators.
  Despite the demands of the record label, Ray Davies ignored pressure to churn out a track, and insisted on taking the time to get the sound right.  The extra effort paid off, and the song proved to be a massive hit.  Perhaps Cameron Crowe could write a movie about it.  Actually, no.  He would probably ruin it by casting Kirsten Dunst as the love interest and getting her to do that stupid fucking camera thing she does in Elizabethtown.
  You Really Got Me is widely regarded by the press, the public, but most importantly, by me, as one of the greatest songs of all time.  Ever.  Period.  People who are much more in the know than little old me (they do exist, apparently) consider it to be one of the most influential songs in hard rock and heavy metal, a track that was instrumental in turning rock 'n' roll into rock.  It pioneered the style of chord progression used in the vast majority of hard rock songs, but it was most noted for its use of distortion.  The songs distinctive guitar sound was created by Dave Davis.  He customised his amplifier by slicing up  the speaker cone with a razor blade.  The Davies brothers were in their late teens when they wrote this song and created their unique sound.  Teenagers.  Yeah, I hate the bastards too.
  Persistent rumours surround the recording of the songs iconic guitar solo, with some people attributing it to a noted session musician at the time, by the name of Jimmy Page (yes, the guy in the video for that Puff Daddy song from Godzilla.  I'm not sure what else he's done.)  While it is true that Page did play some sessions as rhythm guitarist on The Kinks debut album, Kinks, most of the people involved in the recording, Page included, attest to the fact that he only became involved after You've Really Got me had been put to tape.  Others, however, claim that he did record the solo.  I guess it's all a matter of perspective, and this was the sixties, after all.  Cocaine's a hell of a drug, especially when mixed with acid, LCD, marijuana, heroin, mushrooms, alcohol etc.
  In his autobiography, Ray Davis says that if you listen closely, you can hear Dave tell him to 'Fuck off!' during the song.  Ray tired to give his brother some encouragement before the solo, but only managed to put him off, so he got told where to go.  They covered over the expletive with drums, but apparently it is still audible on some recordings.  That's one of the downsides to modern digital recording; there is less scope to have unnecessary, random swearing in the background of songs.
  The Kinks followed up You Really Got Me with their fourth single, (talented teenager bastards).  The rest is history.  You Really Got Me has been covered by many of the artists whom it inspired: Robert Palmer, Van Halen, Mott The Hoople, Sly & The Family Stone, and Salt N Pepa to name but a few, but I'll let one of my personal favourites play you out*:


At this point you're probably asking yourself; What the hell does this song has to do with clowns?  The answer?  Nothing!  Yet…

TRIPPING THE RIFT - SERIES 1 [2004]

Sometimes this planet of ours can feel like a small place.  Television brings the whole world into our living rooms and squeezes it into a box.  We can hop on a plane and in a matter of hours step off on the other side of the Earth.  It is easy to loose track of the scale of things.  You can visit a city and claim to have seen it, but there is so much more to a place than monuments that make for a pretty postcard.  Every building in a city tells something of its character, and like fractals, if we look closer, a whole new world is revealed again at the next level.  Buildings are filled with offices and apartments, offices and apartments with people, and these people overflow with curiosity, and interests of a myriad varieties.  It is the possibilities inherent in this that make me truly appreciate the incomprehensible scale of our little world, which in the great scheme of things, is itself just a drop in the ocean.
  As movies are one of my favourite pastimes, the things people choose to watch are of great curiosity to me.  Our interests are so diverse, it boggles the mind.  While populist entertainment does what it says on the tin, there are endless subdivisions and genres, where the connoisseur can indulge the most obscure of tastes.  This is, of course, not exclusive to movies.
  There are many reasons why niche hobbies do not float to the surface of popular culture.  Some of them are too dark for public consumption (exploitation cinema, cock fighting, pornography, dwarf tossing).  Much are too esoteric to generate mass appeal, which gives us the nebulous area of cult entertainment.  But the main reason certain things remain in the shadows is that they are just shit.  I've endured a lot of stink while researching Stitches, but that is not what we are going to look at today.  It is always a pleasant surprise to discover something that has been around for years, yet it has somehow managed to escape your notice (unless it's cancer).  So without further ado (and I appreciate that I've just spouted much ado-do), I give you Tripping The Rift.


The image above probably tells you all you need to know in order to decide whether or not this show is for you.  Of course, I've never been one to use an image when a thousand words will do.
  Tripping The Rift first appeared on my long distance scanner (I really hate myself sometimes) at the Dublin Circus Skills Convention.  While I chatted with Mr. Balloonatic, I told him of my intention to, over the coming months, watch as many killer clown movies as was humanly possible.  To that end, he recommend Tripping The Rift.
  Tripping The Rift is Canadian animated sci-fi comedy series that ran for three seasons between 2004 and 2007.  Created by Chris Moeller and Chuck Austen, it started off as two short Internet films, the first of which was released in 2000.  Chris Moeller began his career as an animator on The Simpsons, before he moved on to direct episodes of King of The Hill.  There he met storyboard artist Chuck Austen (for dramatic purposes, I'm assuming they had never met before).  Between them, they developed an idea which can be summed up as 'Futurama with dick jokes'.  And rape jokes.  And anal sex jokes.  And gruesome deaths.  Did I mention the dick jokes?
  The first of those Internet shorts was  Love and Darph, which you can see here.  Love and Darph is very rough around the edges, but it certainly shows the potential in this idea for a series.  It introduces us to the surly and sex obsessed star ship captain, Chode McBlob (Stephen Root from Office Space, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Cedar Rapids), gay robot and chief engineer, Gus, and sex cyborg and chief communications officer, Six (Terry Farrell from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).  We also meet - most importantly for my purposes - Chode's nemesis, Darph Bobo, whose introduction here delivers one of the best moments in the entire franchise.
  The second short, Oh Brother (which you can watch here.  Only kidding; it's here) is actually a trailer, and while the animation is far better, it is quite misleading, in that both the tone and the story are completely different, not just to Love and Darph, but to the entire series.
  By the time Tripping The Rift made it to the screen in 2004, some major changes had been implemented.  The animation quality was vastly improved.  The dark tone of Love and Darph was substituted for a more light-hearted approach.  That is not to say that the makers in any way comprised their vision; just that it was all delivered in a brighter, more agreeable package.
  Chode, Gus, and Six all returned, though with some alterations.  Chode was virtually the same, though much of the nastiness evident in Love and Darph had been leavened.  Gus, who was originally voiced by Chris Moeller, was now performed by Maurice LaMarche.  Six changed most of all.  She was completely redesigned, and was now voiced by Gina Gershon.  The original crew were joined by tri-breasted cow/crab/scrotum/bitch T'Nuk (Gayle Garfinkle), and Chode's lizard nephew, Whip (Rick Jones).  The team was rounded out by Spaceship Bob (John Melendez).  Together they were to boldly (I mean that in the pejorative sense) go where no man has gone before, on a galaxy spanning quest for illicit sex, booze, and mild criminal behaviour.
  A story is only as good as its villain, and Darph Bobo (originally Chris Moeller, now Terrence Scammell), also made a welcome return. 


Darph Bobo is the head of an evil clown empire.  He and Chode are lifelong enemies.  They have known each other since school, and have even served time in prison together.  Darph Bobo is fantastic fun to watch, and is consistently one of the highlights of the show.  He's a twisted psychopath and a bumbling fool.  He philosophy is best summed up when he is training the peaceful Kubrickians (spot the movie reference) to be more warlike; 'In this training exercise, you will learn to kill an enemy in a way that is both painful, and comically amusing!'  Two of the most quotable lines of the series are his, 'Hello, Chode,' and, 'I'll get you, Chode!'  Written down, they have no power, but when delivered properly, they always provoke a laugh.
  There is a secondary opponent for Chode and his crew, in the form of Captain Adam, a limp William Shatter spoof.  He is pretty bland, and thankfully doesn't feature too often.
  Each episode of Tripping The Rift is cobbled together with references to the multitude of sci-fi movies and TV shows that have inspired the film-makers.  That, and innuendo.  There is no point talking about the episodes from a narrative point of view, as the story is only there to give the characters something to react to, and then move us along to the next gag.  It is the characters, and how they respond to the different situations they find themselves in, that make Tripping The Rift worthwhile.
  Chode is certainly the strongest character.  He is a completely selfish sex pest, but the writers, coupled with Stephen Root's performance, invest him with a surprising amount of heart, without ever descending into schmaltz.  Gus is a caricature of C-3P0, who despite his over the top camp behaviour, insists he isn't gay.  Six is the straight woman, a sex android with a conscience.  She provides the moral voice, at least, she tries to.  T'nuk is basically a horrible and vain bitch.  Her full name is T'Nuk Layor, which spelt backwards is 'royal kunt.'  Nuff said.  Spaceship Bob is their agoraphobic star ship.  He is prone to panic attacks, and his droll attitude gives the impression that he's really not that keen on being a space ship at all.  Then there's Whip, who is just a waste of space.  That isn't a character trait - the character himself is just a waste of space.  He is underdeveloped, and is nothing but a generic stoner teen.  You could edit him out and loose nothing.
  For straight up sci-fi comedy, one can look no further than Futurama or Red Dwarf.  What gives Tripping The Rift its edge is that it can go places those shows can't.  It works best when it is at its most offensive.  There are moments that are laugh out loud funny simply because you can't believe what you are seeing.  While it is certainly crude, it is so over the top, and performed with such affable cheek, that's it's hard to take offence.  The series doesn't pretend to take any moral stance.  Sure, there are some episodes that touch on having a message, but it is usually undermined with a crude joke.  There is no po-faced Prime Directive here; Tripping The Rift has a puerile directive, plain and simple.
  Like most cult entertainment, Tripping The Rift either appeals to you, or it doesn't.  There is no middle ground.  Here is your check list.  Print it out, laminate it, and keep it in your wallet, so that should you have a horrible accident, and end up in a coma, the nurse will know whether or not she should take advantage of you.

If you're not saying yes to at least two of those, then this ain't for you.  Perhaps you should play it safe, and watch 7th Heaven instead.  If however you find yourself saying 'Yes!  Yes!  Yes!  Yes!  Yes!' then Tripping The Rift is at least worth a look.  Series 1 is only okay - it has its some stand out moments, but can drag at times - but it is just the beginning, and better things are to come!
  Here are the Series 3 opening titles.  I didn't rip Series 1's, as they are in German on my DVD.  These are basically the same as Series 1, but they were redone for Series 3 with fancier graphics.  They give a brief glimpse of the main characters, and clearly set out the spoof nature of the show:


Lastly, I want to talk to you about a special little place I like to call Germany.  Much like when I was trying to get my hands on Clownhouse, the only place I could find a Region 2 version of Tripping The Rift was through the German branch of Amazon*.  It seems that if you're looking for anything in this world, Germany is the place to find it.  Between that, and the fact that Berlin is one of the coolest cities on Earth, Germany, you rock!

LAZZI, THE SECOND

I hadn't planned on this being the next post, but sometimes you've got to roll with the moment.  I got an e-mail this morning which I just couldn't ignore.  It came from Fern Daly (say hello to Fern, everyone - wow; the united voice of my readers is deafening!), and it read:

I certainly took a double take when I saw this!  I wasn't even paying attention to the time lapsed.  I was absorbed in the action, when suddenly, I see my two brothers looking out at me.  This was surprise enough, especially when coupled with the fact that I couldn't figure out how Fern knew what my brothers looked like.  It was only when I watched it back I noticed the sexy bastard on the phone.
  This is so weird!  The night in question was my brother-in-law Mike's stag.  It took place in Galway over a year ago.  At that stage, I had no idea that within six months I would be co-writing a movie of any sort, especially one about clowns.  I'm being stalked by these creatures!  It's like I was already part of their world, and I didn't even know it...  I think my co-writer Conor's response says it best:

               Spooky.  That is mad.  You must of got a fright when you saw that.  I see it as a
               blessing from the clown gods :)

As for Clown Love as a film, it's not bad.  It was nicely shot - the colours popped - and the chirpy music had my toes tapping in my giant clown shoes (they're orthopedic, people, so spare me your snide comments).  I particularly liked the opening.  As I said, I was completely absorbed in the mood of the piece, but it did stumble when it reached the pub scene.  I felt this section was a little stilted, especially after the naturalistic opening.  However the filmmakers pulled it together quickly, and the whole thing ended with a good laugh.
  I find that most short films tend to outstay their welcome, but this one tells it's story concisely, does exactly what it sets out to do, then leaves you to enjoy the afterglow.  Of course, we could talk all day about production values and narrative, but we all know, there's only one highlight here!
  Clown Love also led me to this wonderful image.  Today just gets better and better.  Thanks, Fern, and well spotted!

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STEET [1984]

Hello to Jonathan, Dave, Úna, Lorraine, Mammy, and Eamon, my loyal followers/readers.  Sorry for the delay, but I am in the midst of re-writing the script, so the blog is on the back burner for the next week or two.  I haven't forgotten about you though!  Today I am going to treat you to the first of many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many Nightmare on Elm Street reviews.  Having watched the whole series over the past few weeks, it's interesting to view them in light of the franchise as a whole.
  While Stitches is a comedy-horror rather than a straight up scary movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of my big inspirations.  As he disposes of his victims, Freddy Kreuger freely spouts comic remarks and puns.  Is it just me, or does that sound suspiciously  like a killer clown?  So read on, and whatever you do, don't fall asleep...

My father is wont to open stories with, 'When I was a lad.'  I am going to borrow that expression here as I tell you that, when I was a lad, I was never allowed to watch scary movies.  I was the eldest in my family, so as is usually the case, my parents were stricter with me than with my subsequent siblings (cue sentimental music). 
  I remember when A Nightmare on Elm Street was first screened on television.  It was the mid-eighties, and my clothes and hair were the height of fashion.  The day after A Nightmare on Elm Street was broadcast, 75% of the boys in my class wouldn't shut up about how cool this guy Freddy Kreuger was.  As there were only four of us (yes, city folk; country school classes can be that small!), it put me somewhat in the minority.  The other boys were the youngest in their respective families, so they had been allowed to stay up and watch it with their older brothers and sisters.  The way they described it, A Nightmare on Elm Street sounded like the most amazing movie ever made, ever, by anyone.  Ever!  So all of these years later, had I really missed out?


Yes, I had.  A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic, plain and simple.  It gave us one of the greatest screen villains of all time.  It made Wes Craven one of the most recognised names, not just in horror, but in cinema.  It took fledgling studio New Line Cinema from the verge of bankruptcy into the big leagues of Hollywood (they became known as 'the house that Freddy built').  It gave a young unknown actor called Johnny Depp his big break.  It paved the way for six sequels, a television spin-off, a crossover with the Friday The 13th franchise, a remake, novel and comic tie-ins, figurines, and a thousand imitators.  It inspired more than one musician to write truly god awful music, gave rise to a staple fancy dress party costume, and a partridge in a scare tree (I couldn't resist that and no, I'm not even remotely sorry).
  The story begins in the quiet town of Springwood, Ohio.  Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss) is a teenage girl who is plagued by a recurring nightmare.  When she tells her friends at school - her best friend Nancy (Heather Langenkamp), Glen (Depp), and her boyfriend Rod (Jsu Garcia) - they realise they that their nightmares all have something in common, a guy with a burnt face, a stripy jumper, a fedora, a knife-fingered hand, and a kung fu grip.  As the story unfolds, the line between dreams and reality inevitably blurs.  The swiftly diminishing group of teens realise the horrifying truth (and the story's central and most powerful concept); if you die in your dreams, you die in the real world.
  The idea that the only way to escape Freddy is to stay awake is a stroke of genius.  Try though you might, at some stage you will doze off, and when you do, Freddy will be waiting.  It puts the characters in a position where they cannot avoid confronting there fear.  As dramatic tools go, this is a flawless concept.  We are never more vulnerable than when we are asleep.  That this is exactly when Freddy strikes automatically triggers a primal terror.
  Fear is a very basic emotion and the filmmakers keep this in mind when delivering the scares.  The effectiveness of the nightmares lie in their simplicity.  Rather than attempt to represent the unfathomable scope of the dreamscape, Craven keeps things rooted in the real world of Elm Street.  At any given moment, the characters can't be sure if they are asleep or awake.  I'm not going to go into detail - I don't want to spoil it for the uninitiated - but there are several images in A Nightmare on Elm Street which will stay with you forever, none more so than Johnny Depp in a belly top.
  As the teens explore their nightmares, they learns of the real Freddy Kreuger, and of his connection with the parents of Springwood.  This back story is something that is much elaborated on in the sequels (most notably in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors), but what we get here is perfect on its own.  It creates a personal connection between the antagonists and the protagonist, and gives a real sense of the evil that can lurk behind the seemingly benign façade of a small town.  The philosophy of A Nightmare on Elm Street has deep roots in the human psyche, in that the sins of the father shall we visited on the son.  Mothers and daughters, it would seem, can do whatever the hell they like!
  For most of its running time, A Nightmare on Elm Street doesn't put a foot wrong.  The characters are strong, the villain is amazing, and the scares delightfully creepy.  If there is one discordant note, it is one which runs throughout the film.  Wes Craven specifically wanted to cast the role of Nancy with someone as far removed from a typical Hollywood heroine as possible.  To this end, he cast Heather Langenkamp.  While this does add to Nancy's credibility, the unfortunate truth is that the demands of the role are slightly beyond Langenkamp's abilities as an actress.  While she isn't awful, her delivery is a little flat.
  When Freddy stepped onto the screen in 1984, he was a new kind of villain.  In the past, the nightmare protagonist was a relatively silent killer.  This may have been a vestige of the early days of horror, the likes of Frankenstein, The Wolfman, and the early Dracula pictures, but even modern movie legends like Michael Myres, Jason, Leatherface, or the Terminator (which was realised only a month before A Nightmare on Elm Street) would have a hard time conducting a conversation.  Freddy was completely different.  Not only did he speak, what he said gave the impression that he really, really liked what he was doing.  Whereas the killers of the past went quietly about their business, Freddy scared you, laughed at your pathetic fear, and then he killed you.  What a shit!
  Like all of the best storytelling, A Nightmare On Elm Street has aged well.  Despite its flaws, it is a true masterpiece.  While Freddy's status in pop culture has faded, time has not dulled the edge of those razor claws.  Wes Craven had intended this be a stand alone movie.  He wanted it to end on a happy note, but was forced into creating a more open ending by the producers, who saw the franchise potential in the story.  Despite this reasoning, and even if no sequels had been made, the ending here is fantastic, and the movie is better for it.
  A Nightmare on Elm Street is complete in and of itself.  While some of the sequels are fun, none of them manage to achieve the perfect balance found here.  It is a must see, and I defy you to not have the nursery rhyme running through your head when you walk away!


I was in my twenties when I first saw A Nightmare on Elm Street.  It was the only one of the Freddy movies that I had seen before I commenced my research for Stitches, but between various trailers and video clips, I was very familiar with the character, or at least I thought I was.  The Freddy that pop culture idolises is a one-liner-spouting killing machine.  But this was never Wes Craven's intention for the character.  In his mind, Freddy was a nightmare villain, pure and simple; there was nothing comic about him.  It was the later installments that enhanced this side of his personality.
  I wish I had seen movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street at an age when they might truly have frightened me.  Watching them later in life, I appreciate the scares more than I actually feel them.  In more recent years I've been given good solid jolts by movies such as The Descent, Ring and Ring 2 (the Japanese versions), and the Korean film The Eye, but in terms of a movie that actually gave me an honest to goodness nightmare, that honour goes to, of all things, The NeverEnding Story.  The night that I saw it, I dreamed I was being chased across the fields by a man in black who was riding on the back of Falkor.  I woke up screaming.  Yes people, what it took to scare me awake was a benign character in a children's movie.  Behold, the face of terror:


I am not going to pretend for a second I want more nightmares, but while it wasn't a pleasant experience at the time, it sure made for a good memory!

HOUSEKEEPING

I'm making a few changes to the blog.  Firstly, I am going to purchase my own domain name at the weekend.  Also, I am changing the publishing address.  Instead of vicariator.blogspot.com/ you will find it at stitcheslaughing.vicariator.com/.  It's a pain, as I'm finally showing up prominently in Google searches, but I want to do this now, before I get any further into it.

In other news, for those of you who just can't get enough of this shit, I've started another blog called Multi-Story Incubator.  I will be contributing to this far less frequently, but it will hopefully prove to be some fun.  See what you think!

THE CLOWN MINISTRY HANDBOOK, Written by Janet Litherland

Christian clowns.  As Jesus said to Thomas, 'I shit you not.'  I had never realised there was such a thing, but one of the first groups you encounter when you peer into the greater world of clowning, are those who clown for Christ's sake.  This isn't some niche group.  They are a wide-spread ministry, who even have their own handbook:


When I discovered that clown ministry existed, I assumed it was a figure of speech, like a 'clown society' or 'clown troupe,' or perhaps it was a union, or another name for clown college.  I was mistaken in all of these conjectures.  The true meaning of it only became clear to me when I attended the Dublin Circus Skills Convention, where I met Richard Kane, a professional clown.  I thought he was joking when he told me about them (he is, after all, a clown), but no, the clown ministry is exactly what it purports to be; a clown ministry.  Go figure!
  Clown ministry is not a vast organisation, but an ethos.  Those who practice it encourage others to set up ministries in their own areas, spreading the joys of Christ through the terrors of clowning.  Clown minsters visit nursing homes and hospitals, and perform their act in schools, at fairs, or at conventions.  They basically do everything any other clown does, but they bring their faith into it too.  In areas where the locals have really embraced this practice, they even go so far as to allow clowns to partake in church services: bringing up gifts, doing the collection, or providing entertainment during church events.  In some parishes, the local priest might even have their own clown persona, though I'm sorry to report that he does not say mass in this guise.  Now that I would like to see!
  The Clown Ministry Handbook  is a very interesting read.  It gives a real insight into what is undoubtedly a strange world.  The idea of the clown as a positive social agent is not specific to Christians.  Marian Finucane recently interviewed someone about the organisation Clowns Without Boarders§ (this is the link to the American site; for some reason the Irish site is filled with viruses, so avoid!).  Clowns Without Boarders seeks to bring joy to the grief stricken areas of the world, their motto: No child without a smile.  This is a noble cause, and credit must be given to these people for their charitable spirit, although in fairness, they could have chosen a less disturbing logo:


But a clown spreading laughter is to be expected.  Christian clowning is something else.  Where does the idea of spreading the word of Christ through clowning come from?  According to the handbook, its rational is derived from the Bible, the most common reference being:

We are fools for Christ's sake. [Corinthians 4:10]

Other quotes, such as 'But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise' [1 Corinthians 1:27] and 'Serve God with gladness' [Psalms 100:2] are also used as justification.  While it is understandable that people would look to the Bible for validation, like much Biblical interpretation, this does feel like trying to fit the square peg of 'the Word of God' into the round hole of 'what we would really like it to mean.'  There is a deeper rational to be found in the Passion itself.  When the soldiers crowned Jesus with thorns, dressed him in regal robes, and named him 'King of The Jews,' they did it to make a fool of him.  There is a certain irony in taking the fool, or the clown, and turning the joke back on the hecklers.
  The Clown Ministry Handbook isn't just about religion.  Behind the Christian supra-text is a basic guide on how to create your own clown.  It covers everything from face painting, different styles of costume, ideas for props, and it details numerous sketches to help the budding clown get started.  These lectures are broken up with the biographies of various people who have brought clown ministry into their communities.  As the book states:

"Clown ministry isn't just entertainment; nor is it preaching in costume.  It is a means of touching souls, something most clowns somehow manage to do.  Perhaps all clowns, whether or not they realise it, are involved in ministry."

This is certainly true historically.  All clowns have an agenda of sorts.  With some it is to entertain.  Some seek to educate*.  Some do it purely for the cash.  Others want to kill you and wear your face.  With all of that in mind, it makes sense that there are those who would use clowning to share their beliefs.  Jacques Lecoq, a famous French mime during the latter half of the twentieth century, said, 'For several years now the clown has taken on a great importance; not in the sense of the traditional circus, which is dead, but as part of the search for what is laughable and ridiculous in man…'  But this crossover between clowning and spirituality is nothing new; it's just the terminology that has changed.  What we call the clown today, was once simply, the fool.
  The fool has long been associated with religion (and I do not mean that in a facetious sense).  The Pueblo Indian Delight Makers, and the Cheyenne Contrary Makers, are the witch doctors of their tribe.  They prescribe remedies and perform rituals as much as they provide entertainment.  Some of their ceremonies are still practiced even today, albeit mostly as a tourist attraction.  Taoist monks laugh a great deal during certain of their ceremonies.  The modern carneval (farewell to the flesh) was originally a Christian celebration held just before Lent.  But most interesting of all has to be the medieval Feast of Fools.
  The Feast of Fools was a massively popular public event that took place from the fifth to the sixteenth century.  A successor to the Roman Saturnalia (which makes it - debatably - a precursor to what we now call Christmas), The Feast of Fools was a very interesting occasion.  People would dress up in a mockery of the clergy, and perform ceremonies that ridiculed those of the church.  Even the clergy would partake.  They wore masks and robes, and engaged in borderline blasphemous activities.  They would sing and dance in the streets, and eat black pudding at the side of the alter.  Most amazing of all though, is that this behaviour was sanctioned by the church!
  During the Feast of Fools, everyone was allowed - nay encouraged - to embrace the darker side of life; to play the fool, if you will.  This wasn't being 'a fool for Christ's sake.'  This was something far darker and more primal.  While the rest of the year was spent living a good and solemn life, for this short time, you were allowed to unleash what was normally kept in check.  This is, of course, a dangerous freedom to grant, and over time, the Church clamped down on these celebrations, eventually banning them in the fourteenth century.
  But while the fool and religion have a complex history, the clown and the fool are very different individuals.  The fool represents the chaos inherent in all of us.  It is a state of mind, and doesn't have a particular form.  The clown, however, is a very specific image, and one that doesn't gel with a Christian attitude.  I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Christian clowning, but much like Christian rock, it just doesn't feel right to me.  Christian rockers take sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and transmogrify them into chastity, abstinence, and rock 'n' roll.  Something pretty integral is inevitably lost.  Christian clowning makes me feel the same way.  Holy water and greasepaint just don't mix!
  The Clown Ministry Handbook becomes more technical the further you get into it.  While this is no doubt useful to many of its readers, once the book stopped discussing the history and motivation of the Christian clown, it was of little interest to me.  Many of the gags described are laden with Christian messages, to the point of being painfully didactic.  However, one thing Richard Kane told me was that in clowning circles, Christian clowns are the most willing to share their routines.  They have no problem with you taking their gags and performing them without the Christian element.  While their ultimate goal is to extol the virtues of Christ, they are, first and foremost, entertainers.
  As with Christian rock, it's hard to be too critical, as it is all performed with the best of intentions.  I have no doubt these people bring joy to a certain portion of the populace.  But while I can't say that I hate it, there's nothing to stop me politely making my excuses, backing away, and leaving town on the next available donkey.

*  This level of artistry seems to be firmly rooted in the past.  Philemon, a Christian clown from the forth century, was crucified for mocking the pagan beliefs of the time.  In the sixteenth century Erasumus's published his famous essay, The Praise of Folly.  It was a biting satire, in which Folly herself is the lead character.  It proved an incendiary text, and one of the catalysts of the Protestant Reformation.  The comeddia dell'arte, hugely popular from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, was a breeding ground for social and political satirists.  At the time of of the French Revolution in the eighteenth century, comedians were forbidden to use speech in their acts, as many of their performances were deemed subversive.
  In the late nineteenth century Dan Rice was one of the leading entertainers in America, earning more each week than his good friend, Abraham Lincoln.  In the early part of the twentieth century, Vladimir Durov was exiled from Russia for his subversive routines.  During the Russian revolution of 1917, Vitaly Lararenko used his satires to entertain and inspire the troops on front line.  Joseph Grimaldi, Grock, Charlie Chaplin, Albert Fratellini, Marcel Marceau, Otto Griebling, Lou Jacobs; these are giants of the clowning world, not because they were masters of the pratfall, but because they are artists and philosophers.  Much like myself, really, except I wear more subtle makeup.
